Ukraine

Even if you have been living under a rock for the past year, you know that something is going on in Ukraine. Oh, and it is “Ukraine”, not “the Ukraine”. Not sure where the fuck that got started, but it needs to stop. You don’t say ” the Mexico” do you? Then stop fucking saying “the Ukraine”. Sorry. I got a little sidetracked for a minute.

Anyway, back to the situation in Ukraine. Russia has invaded, taken control of a sizable chunk of Crimea, and doesn’t seem to give a flying fuck what anybody thinks about it. Most folks whose opinions I’ve heard, even staunch military supporters, seem to think that we need to mind our own fucking business. Comments about not being the world’s police force and such. In general terms, I agree.

Let’s step back and analyze the situation more closely. First of all, is Ukraine an ally, or at least a good friend of the United States? I’m not talking about a friend that we buy with boatloads of cash, who would cut our throats the first chance they got if the money were to stop flowing. I’d say, close enough.

Is this an enemy invasion, or an internal, civil matter? No way to say for sure. There was an invasion by a foreign force, but there was also a secession vote, which allegedly passed in favor of seceding. Now, had the vote to secede taken place before the first Russian boots hit the dirt in Crimea, it would have appeared much more credible. But it didn’t.

Given the circumstances, it is a gray area. Now let’s compare the situation to our last two large scale military operations: Iraq and Afghanistan. Did either one attack us? Not in any real manner, no. Did they attack one of our friends or allies? Again, no. Were either of them our friends or allies, find themselves under attack by a foreign force and ask for our help? Again, no.

Yet we invaded in force and stomped the shit out of them, with much less concrete justification than is on the table in the current situation.

But harsh words from a pussified pResident that no one takes the least bit seriously is all we have to offer Ukraine.

Of course. The one time I have some skin in the game, we finally decide to mind our own fucking business. Great! Fucking lovely, in fact.

The difference here, of course, is that the OPFOR can cause us long-term problems.

Ironically (or not, maybe) the former Ukrainian that we both know thinks this is a perfect opportunity for us to mind our own business. *shrug*

Not that we were going to do anything else, apparently.

I’m reasonably sure I want us to mind our own business in this case. Mostly because when Vlady decides to make DC glow in the dark in retaliation for us not minding our own business, we’re close enough geographically to suffer significantly.

Mostly, I’m pissed off that we insist on sticking our nose in everyone else’s affairs, except the one time I give a shit about the outcome.
